Canon PowerShot S3 IS review at dpinterface

Posted by Steve on 10th June 2006

canon powershot s3 IS reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera is available at dpinterface. The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a 6 megapixel ultra zoom camera, equipped with a 12 times optical zoom and optical image stabilization. The PowerShot S3 also offers a range of shooting modes, such as Auto mode, a range of Scene modes, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and fully Manual to support both inexperienced as well as the more demanding photographers.

Here are some of the review results:
“Everything about the S3 IS’ performance is fast except autofocus. The camera fires off continuous shots at over 2 FPS till the memory card is full. Autofocus is fairly fast but still lags behind the Panasonic FZ7 and even the Sony H5. […]

All-in-all, the Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a great ultra-zoom with very good image quality and some unique features. Well, the Canon S-series ultra-zoom cameras are usually known as hybrid cameras because of their superior movie mode. So, some improvements ought to be made so the S3 IS will really become a bridge between camcorders and digital cameras. If you can live with the small LCD and few tiny issues here and there, I’d recommend the S3 IS.”

Canon PowerShot A540 review at imaging resource

Posted by Steve on 9th June 2006

canon powershot a540 reviewImaging resource have reviewed the Canon PowerShot A540 digital camera. The Canon Powershot A540 is an ultra compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution and a 4 times optical zoom. The Powershot A540 offers full manual exposure mode, giving additional control to advanced photographers, while an automatic shooting mode and scene modes are available for the point and shoot photographers.

The review results:
“Its combination of automatic and manual features make it very approachable for novices, but interesting for experienced users, the net result being a camera that will satisfy a broad range of interests and provide a good path for novice users to expand their photographic horizons as their experience grows. You can even add accessory lenses and put it in a waterproof case. One of the more popular features of the A-series is their use of AA batteries, something we also like. I’d like to see it equipped with a more accurate optical viewfinder (the optical path is not straight through the front to the back), and its image noise at ISO 400 and 800 was on the high side, but that’s pretty normal. As with other legendary Canons, the A540 is a camera that will meet the needs of the average consumer very well. It’s an easy Dave’s Pick.”

The review conclusion:
“I had no real quibbles with the Canon A700 (apart from the double-manual system), and lots of pleasant surprises. In the end what I most loved about this AA battery-based gem was the 6x zoom and manual control of exposure with an unusually easy to find and use EV adjustment setting.”

Canon EOS 30D review at TrustedReviews

Posted by Steve on 2nd June 2006

canon eos 30d reviewTrustedReviews adds another review to our growing list of Canon EOS 30D tests. The Canon EOS 30D is a midrange digital SLR camera with 8.2 megapixels resolution, a high quality CMOS sensor and a large 2.5 inch LCD display. The EOS 30D has got impressive continuous shooting performance, being able to capture up to 5 frames a second as JPEG and RAW files.

The Canon EOS 30D was awarded 8 out of 10 points in the overall result and 9 out of 10 for its image quality.

The reviewer’s conclusion:
“A bit of a disappointment for anyone hoping for a major upgrade, the EOS 30D is unlikely to attract anyone who already owns a 20D. However newcomers to the mid-level DSLR market will find a superbly specified camera with the usual Canon hallmarks of reliability, design and outstanding image quality. For the serious amateur or semi-pro it is the ideal camera.”

Design and style
Viewfinder

Where it is not so hot:
It’s not cheap!
Red eye
Small memory card supplied

Summary
The Canon IXUS 800 IS gives you plenty of confidence when it comes to taking a picture. It handles most situations very well. The build quality is excellent too and I also like the design and style. The Canon A540 was awarded 8 out of 10 points in the overall review rating and here is the review verdict:
“The A450 is a very capable camera and good value for money, and would make an excellent choice for anyone who wants to learn more about photography before moving on to a semi-pro zoom or DSLR. canon powershot a530 reviewA review of the Canon Powershot A530 is available at cameras.co.uk. The Canon Powershot A530 is equipped with a 5 megapixel sensor, a 4x optical zoom lens and a 1.8 inch display. With shooting modes ranging from manual to fully automatic, the Canon A530 is an interesting camera for both point and shoot photographers as well as more demanding photographers.

Picture quality
Value for money

Where it is not so hot:
Shutter lag
Red eye

Summary
Considering the price of the Canon Powershot A530 I think it offers very good value for money. The camera is not perfect, but the picture quality is much better than most cameras in this price range are capable of producing. Canon PowerShot S3 IS review at dpreview

Posted by Steve on 20th May 2006

canon powershot s3 IS reviewThe Canon PowerShot S3 IS has been reviewed at dpreview. The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a 6 megapixel ultra zoom camera, equipped with a 12x optical zoom lens and optical image stabilization. With a range of exposure modes, such as Auto mode, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, and a range of Scene modes, both inexperienced photographers as well as photographers demaning more creative control will be able to use the Canon S3.

Here are some of the review results:
“Comparisons with it predecessor aside, the S3 IS Image quality is very good - certainly on a par with most of its competitors […].
But ultimately, like the models that came before it, the appeal of the S3 IS goes beyond simple pixel-peeping; it has a class-leading feature set, a very reliable image stabilization system (the benefits of which cannot be overstated) and superb handling. It’s well-priced, incredibly versatile and - above all - highly enjoyable to use. Despite the long lens and speedy operation it’s not the ideal ’sports’ camera (the focus at the long end of the zoom isn’t fast enough and does hunt a little), but for sheer shooting pleasure and versatility the PowerShot S3 IS still takes some beating.”

Canon EOS 30D review at DigitalCameraInfo

Posted by Steve on 17th May 2006

canon eos 30d reviewA review of the Canon EOS 30D dSLR camera has been published at DigitalCameraInfo. The Canon EOS 30D is a midrange digital SLR camera with 8.2 megapixels resolution on a high quality CMOS sensor and a large 2.5 inch LCD display. The LCD display has a viewing angle of up to 170 degrees, allowing you to take over head or close to the ground shots, while still being able to preview the scene. One of the Canon EOS 30D’s most impressive features is the continuous shooting performance.

The review results:
“Its solid build, excellent image quality, and respectable speed (5 fps at 8.2 megapixels) make it a very attractive camera for a range of users. Weddings, portraits, photojournalism, family pictures, and even landscapes are perfectly within the Canon EOS 30D’s scope, as many thousands of 20D users have proven. Photographers who own other Canon SLRs have a very good option in the 30D: it can be either a step up from the Rebel or Rebel XT or a moderate-cost backup to the 5D or 1D series. The 30D feels very substantial and professional compared to the Rebels, and its interface and build quality look just fine in comparison to Canon’s more expensive cameras.”
