Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 review at DCRP

Posted by Steve on 24th June 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewDCRP have posted a review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS digital camera, also known as the Ixus 800. The Canon PowerShot SD700 is an ultra compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution, a 4x optical zoom and a 2.5 inch LCD. The PowerShot SD700 is also equipped with an optical anti shake feature that reduces picture blur.

Here is part of the review conclusion:
“The PowerShot SD700 is a compact and very stylish camera. […] Thankfully Canon didn’t dump the optical viewfinder on this camera — that feature seems to be going the way of the dinosaur in the ultra-compact class. […]

Camera performance is very good. The camera starts up in about a second, it focuses quickly, and shutter lag was not a problem. Shot-to-shot times were impressive, as was the SD700’s low light focusing abilities. The continuous shooting mode is superb. […]

The SD700 produced very good photos with just a few annoyances. Photos were well-exposed, with nice color, low noise through ISO 200 (and reasonable noise at ISO 400), and minimal purple fringing. […]

I always enjoyed using the PowerShot SD500 and SD550, and with the SD700 Canon has given me even more to love. It’s not quite perfect (but what camera is?), but the SD700 is an easy recommendation to anyone who wants great photos and performance from a compact and stylish camera.”

Canon PowerShot SD600 / Ixus 60 review at imaging resource

Posted by Steve on 24th June 2006

canon powershot sd600 reviewThe Canon PowerShot SD600 digital camera, also known as the Ixus 60, has been reviewed at imaging resource. The PowerShot SD600 is a compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution, a 3 times optical zoom, and a large 2.5 inch LCD. Like all current PowerShot models, the SD600 is also capable of recording high speed action with up to 60 frames per second in movie mode, albeit with a reduced resolution of 320×240 pixels.

The review summary:
“Along with providing solid image quality in regular lighting conditions with good color and accurate skin tones, the SD600 incorporates many of Canon’s technological advances for shooting with high ISOs. Boasting an ISO 800 setting is one thing — several rivals have also started offering these ISO levels and higher — but Canon backs up this ISO sensitivity rating with real, usable results. […] Canon’s DIGIC II processors continue to produce great results in a number of areas, particularly by nearly eliminating shutter lag when you pre-focus. As I’ve said before in this review, if you want a slightly snazzier looking Digital ELPH with a larger screen, spend the extra $50 and buy the SD630 which has a 3-inch screen compared to the SD600’s 2.5-inch display. These minor quibbles shouldn’t prevent you from considering the SD600 though, which is an excellent camera in its own right, and deserving of a Dave’s Pick.”

Canon PowerShot A430 review at dpinterface

Posted by Steve on 17th June 2006

canon powershot a430 reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot A430 digital camera is available at dpinterface. The 5 megapixel Canon PowerShot is equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2 inch LCD display. The Canon A430 also features wireless network connectivity allowing you to transfer photos to the computer without the need for a usb cable or print directly to a printer equipped with the optional wireless printer adapter.

The results of the review:
“The Canon A430 has a 4X lens which is best suited for long zoom shots as it’s not very wide-angled but has a big telephoto reach. The camera has a small and low resolution 1.8 inch LCD which is still visible in low-light and outdoors. Three other “good” things about the Canon PowerShot A430: About average battery life, very fast performance (especially the unlimited continuous shooting feature) and the 1 cm macro mode.
Image quality was most impressive - low levels of color fringing and noise were the main things. Noise was impressive till ISO 200 and still good at ISO 400 with some cleaning up. I think the A430 could’ve pushed till ISO 800 but Canon chose to omit that.”

Canon EOS 5D review at ephotozine

Posted by Steve on 15th June 2006

canon eos 5d reviewA review of the Canon EOS 5D dSLR has been posted at ephotozine.

The review verdict:
“The Canon EOS 5D is a very capable camera, which produces silky smooth images right up to ISO400 and beyond that, noise levels are still very well controlled thanks in part to the full frame sensor. Sensor size is also to blame for another trait, vignetting with wide angle lenses is a real problem if you like to shoot wide open.

Value for money is the EOS 5D’s weakest point. With an RRP of £2540, that makes this camera cost £1240 more than the rival Nikon D200 (based on RRP’s), with what appears to be only a marginal gain in image quality. Of course this only applies with the right lenses, which are also costly.

If the idea of having a camera with a sensor the same size as 35mm film is just too much for you to resist, at any price, then the Canon EOS 5D is clearly for you.”

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 review at LetsGoDigital

Posted by Steve on 13th June 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewLetsGoDigital have reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS digital camera.

The review result:
“To sum things up, we have nothing but praise for the top model from the Digital IXUS series: the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS. The camera features a user-friendly operation, and produces first-rate image quality. It is not a camera for the photographer with high demands looking for something compact, whilst also wanting to make choices in aperture and shutter speeds, but then again, the Canon IXUS 800 IS does not claim to be this type of camera in the first place. It is an attractive design camera, attaching particular value to quality and ease. And once you have worked with an optical image stabilizer and have experienced the advantages of care-free photography in every imaginable situation, you are not likely to return to a camera that is not equipped with an image stabilization system. We can conclude the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS is a champion among compact cameras, a camera that truly deserves to be a style icon!”

Canon PowerShot S3 IS review at Steve’s Digicams

Posted by Steve on 13th June 2006

canon powershot s3 IS reviewSteve’s Digicams have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera. The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a 6 megapixel ultra zoom camera, equipped with a 12 times optical zoom lens. To be able to make use of the long zoom without needing a tripod, the PowerShot S3 offers optical image stabilization as well as high ISO 800 sensitivity. The PowerShot S3 has a range of shooting modes, such as Auto mode, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, and a range of Scene modes, catering to the needs of both inexperienced as well as the more demanding photographers.

The results of the review:
“Like its predecessor the S2, the PowerShot S3 IS is a very capable entrant in the megazoom digicam market. With 6-megapixels of resolution, a high-quality image-stabilized 36-432mm zoom lens, very good image quality and industry-leading support for moving images, the S3 IS offers a compelling combination of quality and versatility. It will please both the beginner and the advanced photographer with its consistently well-exposed and sharp results. The S3 IS presents a worthy alternative for consumer digicam users considering an upgrade to a consumer dSLR. While its image quality, responsiveness and viewfinder quality are not quite up to dSLR standards, the S3’s versatility, especially its movie mode and articulating LCD viewfinder, is unmatched by any dSLR available today. If you have a need for megazoom focal lengths, the S3 IS also represents a terrific value; while dSLR image-stabilized long focal length lenses sell for thousands of dollars, the S3 IS can be had for under $500, image-stabilized zoom lens included.”

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 review at dpinterface

Posted by Steve on 13th June 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, also known as the Ixus 800, has been posted at dpinterface. The Canon PowerShot SD700 is an ultra compact digital 6 megapixel camera with a 4x optical zoom and a 2.5 inch display. The SD700 is also the first of Canon’s digital Elph cameras to offer image stabilization to counteract blurred photos and offers a high ISO sensitivity mode for shooting fast moving action or in low light situations.

The summary of the review:
“Overall performance for this stylish little camera was very good save for autofocus speeds. […] Featuring a 2 cm macro mode and 4x digital zoom to get in closer, the SD700 is a nice camera for macro shooting. In addition, the Canon SD700 has good image quality and low noise as well. Despite that, it has some problems as well such as some soft photos, low corner sharpness and worse overall image quality compared to the SD550. Finally, the SD700 has a nice stylish body but no manual controls, no live histogram and its buttons feel cheap.

So if you’ve read the entire review, you’d have noticed that the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH is a great all round compact camera with a few minor bumps here and there. If you can live with the about average image quality and scarce controls, then the SD700 IS is for you.”

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 review at Steve’s Digicams

Posted by Steve on 13th June 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, also known as the Ixus 800, has been posted at Steve’s Digicams. The Canon PowerShot SD700 is an ultra compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution, a 4x optical zoom and a large 2.5 inch LCD display. It is also Canon’s first PowerShot camera to feature an optical image stabilizer.

The review verdict:
“The PowerShot SD700 is another outstanding member of Canon’s Digital ELPH series, offering great image quality, robust performance, and useful exposure modes, all packed in an ultra-compact, durable and stylish shell. It’s sure to make an excellent choice for any user in the market for an extremely pocketable 4x zoom, high resolution digicam. At about US$499 MSRP, it is roughly $100 more expensive than its SD630 sibling, but its combination of 4x optical zoom lens and Image Stabilization will be worth the extra cost to those who need those features.”
