Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 test at Digital Camera Review

Posted by Steve on 17th July 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewDigital Camera Review have posted a review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, also known as the Ixus 800. The SD700 is an ultra compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution, a 4x optical zoom and a large 2.5 inch display, supported by optical image stabilization to reduce the risk of blurred photos.

They write:
“With several trade shows to attend each year, a couple of my colleagues ended up with the SD700 IS. They don’t like to carry large cameras, but were getting increasingly disappointed with the images from their older, slim cameras that didn’t do well in low light. With the SD700 IS, they get a camera that can take excellent shots of the latest and greatest electronics in the sometimes challenging light of trade show exhibits. All while still being small enough to easily pocket and not be too noticeable.

The above example is only one of many situations where the SD700 IS feature set will come in handy. It has excellent image quality, good battery life, and very fast operation. While it doesn’t have any true manual modes, the person that buys this camera typically isn’t looking for them. The included feature set, including the fun My Colors feature, is fun to use. While the camera is not cheap, it is worth it if it’s in your budget.”

“The SD 700 IS is, in essence, everything a pocket camera should be; fast, easy to use, well designed and - above all - reliable. When you’ve got little or no manual control the reliability and accuracy of the automatic focus, exposure and white balance systems is of paramount importance, and it is here where the SD 700 IS really shows its mettle; out of the 750+ shots we took for the gallery no more than a handful had any problems at all with exposure, focus or color. The Canon PowerShot S3 IS offers exposure modes for both point and shoot photographers and more experienced users. It is equipped with a 6 megapixel image sensor and a 12 times optical zoom which is supported by an optical image stabilizer.

“The long-zoom digital camera market is getting pretty crowded these days, so it takes a lot for a product to really stand out. Despite the stiff competition though, the Canon PowerShot S3 IS is indeed a standout product. […]
If you’re looking for a good all-around camera with great features, a long zoom lens, image stabilization, and a really excellent, well-integrated movie mode, all at an affordable price, there really isn’t another model on the market that’ll fill the bill the way the S3 IS does. It offers 6 megapixels resolution and a large 2.5 inch LCD display. The PowerShot A700 also impresses with its 6 times optical zoom, and should be suitable to both inexperienced and demanding photographers alike.

Putting aside the price if picture quality is important this camera will not let you down. Photos are as sharp as I have managed to take. Colours are strong as well. It also has all the features you need if you enjoy photography. All in all the Powershot A700 makes a compelling case to be bought. Recommended.”

Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Ixus 800 review at imaging resource

Posted by Steve on 30th June 2006

canon powershot sd700 reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS digital camera, also known as the Canon Ixus 800, is available at imaging resource. The Canon PowerShot SD700 is an ultra compact digital camera with 6 megapixels resolution, a 4x optical zoom and a large 2.5 inch LCD display. It is also Canon’s first digital ELPH camera to feature Canon’s optical image stabilizer.

The review conclusion:
“Though it’s a pricey little camera, the 6-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS offers some great tools for improving your photos that go beyond megapixels. In particular, the camera might change how consumers think about taking low-light photos. […] In the case of the SD700 IS, images captured in low-light at ISO 800 made excellent 4×6’s and not-bad-at-all 8×10s. In regular lighting at lower ISOs, things improved further with the camera providing solid image quality, good color and accurate skin tones. […]
Despite some other small criticisms of the camera — no dedicated IS button, small and inaccurate optical viewfinder — if you want a superior compact camera that doesn’t put all its resources into megapixels, you will not go wrong with the SD700 IS, making it an ideal Dave’s Pick.”

Canon PowerShot A430 review at imaging resource

The review summary:
“Featuring a 4.0-megapixel CCD, 4x optical zoom, automatic exposure control with a wide range of preset shooting modes, and a real bargain price, the PowerShot A430 does a great job of holding up Canon’s sterling reputation at the low end of their line. Canon PowerShot A540 review at dpinterface

Posted by Steve on 26th June 2006

canon powershot a540 reviewDPinterface have reviewed the Canon PowerShot A540 digital camera. The ultra compact Canon Powershot A540 offers 6 megapixels resolution, a 4x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch display. In addition to the display, the PowerShot A540 is also equipped with an optical viewfinder, something that most ultra compact camera miss these days. Equally ‘above class’ the fully manual exposure mode, which gives additional control to advanced photographers. An automatic mode is of course available for the point and shot photographers as well.

The results of the review:
“The PowerShot A540 also has good battery life though competition is getting better. The LCD is at its largest size as well (for an entry-level camera), being a good 2.5 inches with nice visibility. […]
Delivering fast performance in almost all aspects - except autofocus - the Canon A540 also offers unlimited continuous shooting and a VGA 30 FPS movie mode. […]
The A540’s photos are good as well, with fairly low noise till ISO 400. I’d definitely recommend the Canon PowerShot A540 to anyone who wants a versatile, compact and affordable camera (Who gives you that nowadays?).

In short, the A540 is a good all-rounder with no major problems - only a few quirks here and there.”

Canon PowerShot S3 IS review at Digital Camera Info

Posted by Steve on 24th June 2006

canon powershot s3 IS reviewDigital Camera Info have posted a review of the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera. The PowerShot S3 is a dSLR like camera equipped with a 12x optical zoom lens and 6 megapixels resolution. The long zoom is supported by optical image stabilization and a high ISO 800 mode. With the exposure modes ranging from fully automatic to fully manual, with a range of scene modes in between, the Canon PowerShot S3 should be suitable for all family members.

The review conclusion:
“The Canon PowerShot S3 IS comes to the ultra-zoom digital camera market with a unique set of features. It has the 12x optical zoom lens that qualifies it as part of the ultra-zoom market and couples it with an optical image stabilization system that works incredibly well. […] The S3 has lots of options in its movie mode that aren’t available on any other digital camera and includes dual recording buttons so users can snap full-resolution pictures in the middle of a video clip. […]

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS offers hybrid functionality for a retail price of $499. With its 6.1 megapixels, high-quality 12x optical zoom lens, and smooth image stabilization system, it takes great pictures and videos. Users just have to deal with a few physical idiosyncrasies – poor battery life, a constantly solarizing LCD screen, and poor viewfinder resolution – to get those great shots.”
