Kodak EasyShare V610 review at digital trends

Posted by Steve on 29th April 2006

kodak easyshare v610 reviewA review of the Kodak EasyShare V610 digital camera is available at digital trends.
The Kodak EasyShare V610 is compact dual lens digital camera offering a 10x optical zoom by combining 2 lenses in the same camera body. This is the second dual lens camera Kodak has developed, after the V570. The Kodak V610 lenses cover focal range of 38-114mm and 130-380mm, 35mm equivalent.

The results of the review:
“This one is a toughie. The EasyShare V610 has a number of features that make it attractive: looks, thinness, a 10x optical zoom, built-in Bluetooth and Perfect Touch technology. I really have problems with the LCD screen and the hiccough as the camera “hands off” from one zoom lens to the other. And the camera is pretty slow saving images to the card; overall image quality was average, nothing to write home about with more noise that you should expect from a 2006 digicam.

Pros:
* Thin 10x optical zoom digicam
* Bluetooth enabled
* Built-in Perfect Touch correction
* Easy to use, setup

Cons:
* Zooms “skips” from one lens to the other
* Poor LCD screen in bright sunlight
* Only 135 shots per charge
* Slower response than competitors
* No compression options
* Few manual controls”

Sony Cybershot DSC-M2 review at imaging resource

Posted by Steve on 29th April 2006

sony cybershot dsc m2 reviewA review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-M2 digital camera has been published at imaging resource.
The Sony Cyper-Shot DSC-M2 is a hybrid digital video-camera. It features 5.1 megapixel resolution, a 3 times optical zoom and is capable of recording MPEG4 movies at 640×480 with up to 30 frames per second.

Here is part of the review verdict:
“The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M2 is about as unique a digital camera as could be imagined. It packs a 3x zoom lens and high-resolution five megapixel sensor into a reasonably compact body, and offers generally good image quality as well as movies that are much better than average. The interface has been improved from the original DSC-M1, but still has quirks that could be ironed out. The interface is simply too complicated. […]

[…] While the M2 was sometimes a bit of a mixed bag (with occasionally inconsistent white balance and exposure metering), it generally offered photos that consumers will likely find appealing. […] Movies were better than average for a still camera, thanks both to the MPEG4 compression. […]

At the end of the day, while the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M2 does a lot to emphasise how to integrate (and really take advantage of) video in a still camera, its flaws, particularly in its zoom control and general overcomplexity, make me stop short of strongly recommending it.”

Canon PowerShot S3 IS review at DCRP

Posted by Steve on 29th April 2006

canon powershot s3 IS reviewA review of the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera is available at DCRP.
The Canon PowerShot S3 is an ultra zoom camera with a 12 times optical zoom lens, 6 megapixel resolution and a 2 inch LCD display. The PowerShot S3 is also equipped with optical image stabilization, allowing you to make use of the full zoom range without the use of a tripod and still being able to produce sharp, not blurred, results. Other important features is the rotating LCD display, which is useful for self portraits, as well as extreme angle shots, such as high above head shots or low on the ground shots. Manual exposure control is also available, giving advanced photographers greater control over the image taking process.

Here is an extract of the review conclusion:
“The S3 is feature-packed. If you’re a beginner then you’ll appreciate the automatic and scene modes on the camera, and when you’re ready, the S3 has manual controls too. […]

And then there’s the movie mode, which is one of the S3’s trademark features. You can record video at 640 x 480 (30 frames/second) with stereo sound until you hit the 1GB file size limit. […] You can use the zoom lens during filming, and you won’t have to listen to the zoom motor either, as it’s ultrasonic. You can also take full resolution still photos while simultaneously filming.
Camera performance was very good. The S3 starts up remarkably quickly for an ultra zoom, taking just 1.4 seconds. […]
Photo quality was also very good. The PowerShot took well-exposed photos with Canon’s signature smoothness. […]

Overall, I really like the PowerShot S3, and it earns my enthusiastic recommendation. Yes, it has a few flaws, but doesn’t everything? For people wanting a solid and capable ultra zoom camera, this one should be high on your list.”

Sony Cybershot DSC-W30 review at DigitalCameraInfo

Posted by Steve on 28th April 2006

sony cybershot w30 reviewA review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-W30 digital camera is available at DigitalCameraInfo.
The Sony Cybershot DSC-W30 is a 6 megapixel point and shoot camera, aimed at entry level photographer. The DSC-W30 offers a 3 times optical zoom and a 2 inch LCD display and comes at a reasonable price of around $230. Additionally, the Cybershot W30 offers a high sensitivity mode that allows you to take photos in low light situations.

The review conclusion:
“Built with the technologically disadvantaged in mind, the W30 comes with a function guide that explains what each mode is for and how to make large prints from each image size. A High Sensitivity mode also allows entry-level photographers to grab a low-light shot without the flash. This mode utilizes the high end of the wide 80-1000 ISO range included on the Cyber-shot W30. While its inclusion is a bonus for such an affordably priced digital camera, the mode itself yields less than lovely pictures. […]
Still, some drawbacks should be expected on a $229 digital camera, and, overall, the W30 is a great value. It is easy to use, its other modes produce decent pictures, and the camera body is attractive and thin, which makes it comfortably portable. The Sony W30 provides a good package and basic features, as well as a few bonuses such as the wide ISO range and function guide, at a great price.”

Ricoh GR Digital review at Trusted Reviews

Posted by Steve on 28th April 2006

ricoh gr digital reviewA review of the Ricoh GR Digital has been posted at Trusted Reviews.
The Ricoh GR Digital is the digital successor of the Ricoh GR, and like its predecessor it has been designed with one goal in mind: image quality. It is a job that the GR Digital does very well, keeping aberrations and purple fringing to a minimum, while offering the experienced photographer plenty of manual settings to optimize and adjust the shooting result even further. The GR Digital has a fixed lens, meaning there is no optical zoom, which makes the camera suitable for the purist advanced photographer who wants uncompromising image quality in a wide angle format.

The Ricoh GR Digital scored 9 out of 10 points overall in this review, with 10 out of 10 points for image quality.

They write:
“Ricoh has produced something unique, a compact camera that will satisfy even the most demanding enthusiast. Its combination of compact portability, robust build quality, superb handling, creative control and fantastic picture quality should make it a firm favourite among keen photographers, especially the travel photographers who loved the original GR film camera. An expensive camera, especially for the whole kit, but well worth the money.”
